Learn to make a skylight into the kitchen

If you are thinking for a change into your kitchen, a skylight is maybe the best thing that you can add to the design. You will enjoy the sun and also lower bills. You can choose from many options the model that fits best with your exterior and interior design.

First, you will start by choosing the ideal place of the skylight. You will need to avoid a joist section. If you done that, you will mark the place using nails into the center and the four corners. You will need to clear all the obstacles away. You may need to clear the attic, pipes, wires or some ducts. You will probably need to relocate the place if roof rafters or a structural piece is placed into the opening.

So, you will align the center of the ceiling opening using a plumb bob. You will mark the dimensions suggested by the manufacturer. For this job, you will use a 16d nail which will be driven through each hole. Now, it is time to remove the shingles from the opening area. You will need to use different tools depending on your shingles material. Using a chisel, you will need to pry up the sheathing placed under the shingles. The sheathing pieces will be slid under the existing felt and they will be trimmed at the edges of the skylight opening.

Then, you will need to apply sealant around the skylight opening and let it dry before you proceed. You will need to align the skylight frame with the opening and tighten the flange screws down into the roofing sealant. The flange will sit on top of the shingles and the skylight will be secured to the sheathing through the flange. Then, you will apply sealant to cover the top of the flange, the screws and the fasteners. Now, you will unfold and press the shingles into sealant. You will need to make sure that the shingles cover the bottom, the sides and the top where the skylight frame meets the roof. Then, you will simply attach the clear cover and you will apply caulk to prevent leaks.

Now, you will complete the job by supporting the cut ceiling joist or roof rafter if you have done damage to one or more of them. You will need to connect the joists and position the supporting lumber on each side of the cut opening. You will secure them using wood screws.
