Floor heating

Radiant floor systems consist of a system of pipes which are placed under the floor and continuously circulate warm water through them. Hot water is warming the pipes which let the warm to radiate to the floor, heating it.

So, if you have issues with this kind of system, you will need to check first the temperature gauges placed on the circulator pump.

One pump is measuring the temperature of the water which leaves the pump and the other, the temperature of the water which is returning to the tank. The difference between them should be 15 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and if this value is lower, you will need to raise the heating tank thermostat. If the thermostat isn’t able to raise the temperature of the pipes, you know that the tank is insufficient size and needs to be upgraded or changed.

There are two possible causes if the system’s pressure is slowly dropping. The first cause is that the pump is underpowered for the amount of water needed to circulate through the pipes and the second cause is a possible leak somewhere under your floorboards. So, you will need to perform a quick check into the basement to see if there is any water leak or you can simply pull a corner floorboard up and check them visually. If you detect sweaty pipes or a mildew smell, you know that your issue is a leaking. You will need to turn your system off and ask the help of a professional for a good repair. If your issue is not a leaking, you will probably need to upgrade your circulator pump.

On the other hand, you will need to check the temperature gauges if your system is producing too much heat. The thermostat must be broken if the water which leaves the circulator is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the circulator can be overpowered if the temperature of water is less than 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The system is forcing too much water through the pipes and causes too much heat. So, you will need to lower the rate if flow or to downgrade the system.
