Glue wallboard

If you want to install an electrical plug or a switch to a wall covered by wallboard, you will need to install first an electrical box. The process of installation for those boxes is simple but you will face some problems if you don’t know how to cut the space where the box will be placed. So, you will find the project tough to complete if you don’t know precisely the uses of the box, how big it will be and the place to install it.

in this article you will find instructions for cutting the opening for the box.

The first step is to determinate why you need to install the box. It is recommended to calculate all factors and decide if you really need a new electrical box. So, you will need to know if you will use the box to pull cable from a previous cable location or as a junction box or to install a new switch or plug. Depending on these factors the box will be smaller or bigger and you know precisely how to cut the opening.

You will start by measuring and marking the place where your box will be installed. The box should be placed 16 inches away from the floor for a plug and 42 inches for a switch. These markings will represent the highest point of your cuttings. Then, you will need to use a stud finder to locate a wall stud which is nearest from the mark made. You will need to move the mark to the right side of the wall stud if it is located behind the pencil mark. It is very important to cut the opening and install the box as close as possible to the stud because it is recommended to fix it to the stud. On the other hand, you will need to move the mark to a reasonable distance from the stud to create enough space for the brackets.

Now, you will need to make a marking on the wall with the precise size of the box installed. You will need to hold the box against the wall and using a pencil, you will trace around the edge of the box. In this way, you will create the precise size of your hole and you will avoid later adjustments. Now, you will simply use a drywall saw to cut the square and create the hole where the box will be installed.

In case you will need to attach a wallboard to a wall where you already have installed an electrical box, you will need to measure the distance from the floor to the edge of the box. Also, you will need to measure the distance from the stud center to the inside edge of the box. You will use these measurements to draw the box on the wallboard and then, you will simply cut the shape drew before.
