Valve control

If your home uses as system of heating a radiator, you should try to find another solution. Radiators are an old for of heating which doesn’t dry the air like forced air heating systems but it has a great disadvantage if we consider that fact that the warmed air isn’t moved around a room. So, in this way you have hot and cold zones in your rooms, because the radiator warms the air around it but isn’t moving the air.

A floor heating is more efficiently and you can convert your radiator to radiant floor heating, but you must be aware that this job is very challenging.

First, you will need to switch your boiler off and allow it to cool if you want to avoid injuries. Then, you will have to drain the system by opening the valve placed on the side of the boiler. Make sure that the system is completely drained if you want to avoid damage and leak.

Now, you must decide which of your radiators will be removed. You will need to unscrew the nuts which are connecting the pipes to the radiator and you will use a monkey wrench to do that. Now, you can remove the radiator and it is recommended to ask for help because they are very heavy. After that, you will need to locate the intake and outlet pipes in the basement and you will use a hacksaw to cut these pipes. Remove the pieces and expose them by removing the sheet rock used to ceil in the basement. Now, you will need to attach PEX tubing under the floor and you will run the tubing back and forth to create a wave pattern. Waves should be 6-8 inches apart. You will need to use u-connectors to attach pipes to the floor and you can find them with the PEX pipes at the stores. Be careful with pipes and not damage them if you want to avoid a leak.

Now, you will need to attach the PEX tubing to the intake and outlet pipe. You will perform this job using a crimping tool. You will attach to the underside of the floor the aluminum diffuser plates using screws. These plates will direct the heat from the pipes to the floor and will increase the efficiency of the system.

Now, you can refill the boiler and check your system. Make sure that you don’t over-fill the system if you want to avoid a large pressure and a possible damage. You will turn the system on and you will check for potential leaks.
