Information about constructing a load bearing stud wall
An interior element that supports a joist or a beam can be a load bearing stud wall. It can be also one of your exterior walls if your house is wood framed. Studs which are placed 16 inches apart will compose the wall which can be also made like non load bearing interior elements.
First, you should know that a stud wall is composed by a doubled top plate and a bottom plate which are made from linear 2×4 lumber and wood studs. The main wall components are headers and trim boards which are assembled into some rough openings. They are usually build on the floor and then installed upright and fixed.
The first step is represented by the measurements which will be precisely done if you want to avoid any later issues. You will need to mark a line into the place where the wall will be installed and another to 3 ½ inches away to fix the position of the bottom plate.
You will need to use pressure treated lumber if you are building a concrete slab. This material will prevent decay from being in contact with the concrete for the bottom plate. You will need to assure that the bottom and top plates are flat and flush at the end on the slab. You will need to plan the slabs by measuring 16 inches for every piece and you will do that using a measuring tape and a marker. Using a pencil, you will scribe an X on one side of the plates after you have scribed a line on each mark across both plates.
Now, you will need to assemble the wall and you will start by placing the plates on the edge. All components will be placed also on the edge. You will need to align the studs with the pencil lines on the side of the X and make sure that the studs will be precisely aligned with the plates. Then, you will need to drip 2 nails through the plates into the end of each stud and then into the blocks above headers before you attached the top plate. Now, you will simply put it vertical and align it with the marks.
It is time to fix it in place, and you will use concrete nails for that. The bottom plate will need to be secured to the slab or nailed into the plywood. You may need to use a sledgehammer to force the wall into a vertical position. You will need to create corners if your new wall is meeting an old one and you will fix it by nailing it through the face of end studs. Now, you will need to install blocking and you will cut 2×4 lumber and install it between the studs. In this way you will prevent fires which will not spread through wall cavities. Your wall is complete now and you can install windows and other accessories.
