What Is the Tradition of Christmas Lights on Houses?

Displaying Christmas lights in their homes has become an important tradition for most of the homeowners, along with decorating the Christmas tree. Since the invention of the light bulb, lights have evolved into more affordable and practical decorations and in 1923 they were introduced by Calvin Coolidge to become a tradition.

In 1882 an inventor called Edward Johnson created a string of lights that could be used to decorate Christmas trees.

This was only the beginning so not anyone could afford such decoration items. Because people were using candles in trees in 1917 a big fire caused by a candle gave the idea to an entrepreneur called Albert Sadacca to sell Christmas lights at a cheap price. He created the biggest Christmas lightning company back then.

The meaning of Christmas differs from people to people; still we can relate this to the winter solstice when the nights are the longest. The symbolism of the lights used could be statement of reverence for the sun and the stars. Also because of the technological progresses people can now live comfortably during cold winter nights at the warmth of some colored Christmas lights.
