How to check a used excavator

The heavy machineries used in construction that have a boom, bucket and cap, are the excavators. A used excavator comes in very handy because new ones are very expensive. But with the low cost there could come some big repairing costs.

This article will present some tips about how to know if the used excavator is good for buying.

There are two main phases of inspecting a used excavator: the physical inspection and the operation inspection.

1. The physical inspection

First check the engine. Look for soot in the engine compartment, leakages in the engine oil, corrosion in the battery and verify how the cooling system and air cleaning system are functioning.

Second, check the cab, stick, boom and bucket. Look for signs of damages and looseness between the pins. Check the edge and stick from the boom.

Next go to the track and undercarriage. Here you can find broken metal plates in the track and damaged sprockets and rollers and cracked roller frames. Also look at the oil level and driver’s cleanliness.

2. The operation inspection

This step includes starting the engine and start using the stick, boom and bucket too see how they work. Also see how the tracks and the swing system along with the gears and bearing perform.

If you identify something wrong after these checks it means you will invest money in repairing.
