Learn to install a frame in a skylight

A fine installed skylight is depending very much of the installation of the frame. You will need to be careful with the roof and ceiling too. The process of installation is easier if the ceiling is directly attached to the bottom of the roof rafters.

The process of installation is not difficult but you will need to be careful when you remove and reattach a rafter.

For a good framing of the skylight, you will need to read the manufacturer’s specifications if you want to be precise with the width and length of the opening. You will need to remove all roofing materials, ceiling and insulation. Then, you will measure the distance for the opening and you will probably need to cut one more rafter to be sure and create adjustments if needed.

So, you will cut 6 inches above and 6 inches below a rafter using a special saw. Then, you will cut a new rafter from the ridge board to the top of the wall plate. You will need to be very careful to avoid any mistakes. It is recommended to cut a four foot piece of rafter stock and slide it against the rafter. Repeat the process for the lower part of the rafter if you want so simplify your work. You will need to cut one more rafter and fit it for size before you cut two more. You will need to create the exact width of the rough opening by installing one rafter and you will need to make sure that it is nailed at the ridge and top of the wall plate. You will need to make sure that the piece is square at the corners.

The second board will be nailed between the same two rafters. A rough opening is created. Then, you will need to add a new rafter to the outside of the existing rafters. The board will be nailed to each other. Then, a partial rafter will be cut and it will run from the ridge to the top side of the opening. This piece will be attached to the piece nailed to the upper cross piece of the opening.

Next, you will cut a piece that will run from the top of the wall plate to the bottom side of the opening. The piece will be placed to the piece nailed to the lower cross piece of the opening. Two more cross pieces will be cut and nailed to the inside of the opening. Your frame is ready now and you can install your skylight.
